Choosing the right boxes for your move

Moving box types and uses

When packing your belongings, you must first choose the most suitable boxes according to what you need them for.

  • Standard cardboard moving boxes. They are the most commonly used and cost-effective boxes, generally available in brown. There are 3 different sizes according to what is needed. There are smaller ones for heavy and delicate items such as crockery, medium ones for kitchen utensils such as pots and pans and large ones for light and bulky items such as clothes and toys. However, these boxes require a sealing tape to be able to close them, and they do not have handles, which makes them a little more difficult to handle.
  • Reinforced cardboard boxes. These moving boxes are more durable than the above as they are reusable and can be folded and reused at any time. They come with a self-assembly system, which makes assembly quicker and easier, and they are more resistant and also have handles so they can be grabbed and transported with less effort. There are 3 sizes available as mentioned above.
  • Wardrobe boxes. These are fitted with a hanging rail and have handles for easy transport, so they are perfect for hanging up dresses, suits and clothes in general.

Tips on choosing the right moving boxes depending on the types of belongings

  • Weight-related. We recommend that you don’t put too much weight in your moving boxes because if it weighs too much, it will be difficult to move and may even break.
  • Object size. Make sure the size of the box will hold the items you want without crushing or bending them.
  • Have you ever wondered ‘How to pack fragile items?’ It’s a good idea to remember that if you have fragile items to transport, pick strong, reinforced moving boxes or special boxes for fragile items. You can also use material such as bubble wrap to protect any fragile items that may need to be secured during transportation.

Packing boxes for moving house: differences between standard boxes and specialised packing boxes:

Standard packing boxes can be used for light and bulky items, such as toys, bedding or clothes, etc. They are made of single or double layered cardboard. They are the most common, the easiest to find and the cheapest. Admittedly, they are not as strong as specialised boxes and can get into a bad shape if heavy objects are placed in them.

Specialised packing boxes have a specific use. They are designed to protect fragile, awkwardly shaped or heavy objects, such as a chandelier. They are usually made of plastic, plywood or a sturdier type of cardboard. Likewise, they are more durable and protective, and some have specific compartments or designs. They are more expensive and heavier packing boxes, and may be harder to find.

Packing materials

After choosing your packing boxes for the move, you will need to collect packing materials to protect your belongings. Some of the most important packing materials include:

  • Packing plastic. This type of packing material can be used to wrap crockery, glassware and ornaments so that they don’t bump into each other and break.
  • Bubble wrap for more fragile objects, such as TV and/or glass tables.
  • Tissue paper. This is a very convenient packaging material for wrapping porcelain, jewellery or other delicate items.
  • Packing peanuts to put between empty spaces in moving boxes to prevent objects from moving during transport.
  • Moving blanket. This type of blanket helps prevent scratches to appliances and furniture, as well as protecting the floor from scuffs and scratches.

These types of packing materials can be purchased on our website, at moving supply shops, hardware stores and department stores. If you’re wondering about how many moving boxes to buy and how big they should be, remember that it all depends on how many items you have. You can factor in one moving box for every cubic metre of space.

How can you pack for a house move?

After you have the boxes for the move and the packing materials, you can start packing. Here’s how:

  1. Plan and organise your boxes.  Think about what you are going to pack for the move and make a list of boxes.
  2. Do you need to get rid of an item? It’s time to clean out and throw away everything you don’t need, so you can start packing what you really want to keep.
  3. By packing room by room, you will be more organised and do not forget to label them so that they will be easier to find at their destination.
  4. Consider the fragility of some objects, so pack carefully. Use the right packing material, as mentioned above.
  5. Avoid overpacking boxes for the move. Keep in mind that heavy boxes are more difficult to transport and can also break.
  6. Label boxes appropriately on the top or side of the box.

Step by step through the packing process:

  • Gather all the materials you will need for packing.
  • Dismantle all furniture, especially large pieces, so that they take up less space and facilitate transport.
  • Protect all the furniture with blankets so that they don’t get scratched or damaged.
  • Pack fragile objects.
  • Carefully fold clothes and place them in plastic bags or boxes.
  • Pack all your books in sturdy cardboard boxes.
  • Wrap each glass and plate in bubble wrap and place them in different boxes.
  • Unplug appliances and clean the cables. You may also want to wrap them in blankets.
  • Label boxes correctly. Use permanent markers and adhesive labels, write in large letters that can be understood, put the labels in a visible place and protect them with transparent adhesive tape so that they do not rub off or get damaged.
